Cars 2 - Have You Seen It?

A lot of my Facebook friends have posted that they are going today to see CARS 2 (In Disney Digital 3D™ and IMAX® 3D). We will probably go one day this week. Every time my kids see a trailer or commercial for Cars 2 merchandise, they start asking when we are going to see it. I was watching "After The Catch" on Discovery the other night and found out that Captain Sig from Deadliest Catch voices the character of a crab boat.

Star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places in “Cars 2” when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. Mater finds himself torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret mission orchestrated by master British super spy Finn McMissile (voice of Michael Caine) and the stunning rookie field spy Holley Shiftwell (voice of Emily Mortimer). Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world. The fast-paced fun includes a colorful new all-car cast, complete with menacing villains and international racing competitors.

Hey Disney Fans!

I have a daughter who is 8 and she was super excited when Lemonade Mouth premiered on Disney. Bridgit Mendler is one of Shelby's favorite Disney stars. She loves Good Luck Charlie. I was excited to see Tisha Campbell-Martin. I used to love her on "Martin". Of course the DVD features the 10 original songs from the No1 soundtrack! I will admit that we have a couple of the songs on the Ipod that we jam out to in the car!

Lemonade Mouth is a great movie and will relate to many kids who feel they don't have a "voice" in their school/society! In a school where the Principle exclusively supports the athletic programs while the others are forced to meet and practice in the basement, a group of friends decide to take the school by storm. Not only are friendships formed, but a band is formed as well and the rest is history.

Gnomeo and Juliet is a hillarious twist on Shakespeare's legendary tale of Romeo and Juliet as you've never seen it before! Disney's New Releases

Since we got a little bit of snow and ice yesterday, I am so glad we had some new Disney Movies to keep the kids occupied. On Tuesday, Minnie lovers everywhere, (or at least one little girl in the Black household) were very pleased upon the arrival of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie's Masquerade (with Mickey Mote). If you're not familiar with the Mickey Mote, it's the greatest thing since sliced bread! It's a Mickey shaped, child friendly remote control! By choosing the Discovery mode in the movie's menu screen your child, after a quick and easy set up for the Mickey Mote (it's easy, I promise!!) will be responding to questions throughout the movie about scenes they just watched by pressing one of the four color-coded buttons on the device: a yellow star, green circle, orange triangle or blue square. Discovery mode features two levels of play to grow with your child. The Mickey Mote can be used with any Disney Preschool DVD that includes the Discovery Mode feature. To date there are more than 11 titles that can be used with the remote control, just take a look at the back of the package to make sure.

My little Emily is a HUGE Mickey Mouse fan, but especially loves Minnie Mouse. So, when we receive a copy of Minnie's Masquerade for review, she was happy that SHE got a video to watch. She was especially excited to find that this DVD features four playful Minnie-themed adventures previously seen on the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse TV show, a never-before-seen episode, and a free paper mask with festive embellishments that kids can personalize. Of course my princess enjoyed watching Minnie with her very own masquerade mask. In this episode Minnie needs some help getting everything ready for her party including making royal crowns for their costumes, searching for Sir Goofalot’s lost shoe, stringing up paper lanterns and much, much more. At the ball, Professor Von Drake hosts the great Clubhouse Costume Show and gives out prize ribbons to all the friends who have dressed up in some funny and fancy costumes.

Although the cast changed a bit from the first movie, George Lopez is still the voice of Papi and as he is tossed into the role of fatherhood, he learns that sometimes being a parent is much harder than just being a "grown up". This movie is a great tale of family sticking together and proving that no matter who you are or how big you are, you can be a hero!

Toy Story 3 on DVD

In case you've been living under a rock and didn't realize it yet, I thought I'd let you in on a little secret. The final installment of the Toy Story Trilogy has made it to Disney DVD/Blue Ray just in time for you to begin your holiday shopping. What, you haven't even thought about your holiday shopping yet? Well, never fear you're not alone. But, you know that Disney DVDs are always a great idea for anyone on your list. I took the kids to see Toy Story 3 when it debuted in theaters in Disney Digital 3D. It was an awesome movie and we loved it. You can read my review here.

If you've not seen this one, really you are missing out on the best of the Toy Story movies, in my opinion. Even though I have not had a kid grow up and go to college, I know I will and it was a hard movie for me to watch. I DID cry as Andy packed up his toys to move away to college. The end sealed the deal for me too...I won't spoil it for those of you who have yet to see it. But, seriously go out and pick up a copy next time you stumble into Wal-Mart for some milk and end up spending half your day and most of your paycheck in there!

Swim the Ocean with Disneynature

Disney has taken us previously taken us under the sea with Ariel and Nemo, but Disneynature presents Oceans as a Disney Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu- ray + DVD) as you've never seen the sea before! This film puts you right in the action as whales and dolphins leap through the air, sea lions and sea turtles bask on the beach, and coral reef comes to life. This is not your 5th grade Science class under water doccumentary. The film makers captured mesmerizing footage using the most technologically-advanced equipment that has allowed them to bring this to true high-definition powers! Oh, and in case I haven't reeled you in yet, I'll tell ya that Pierce Brosnan is the ever so captivating narrator.

We sat down and put this movie in and I was fully prepared for a nap, but once the movie started I quickly realized that myself nor my children would be napping. Instead we popped some popcorn and watched the movie in it's entirety. Hubby came in at the end of the movie and got interested in it, so we started it over and watched it again. The kids LOVED it and so did we! It is a great movie and a wonderful way to teach our children why we have to protect our wild life! The DVD had the "Make A Wave" Disney's Friends For Change Music Video Featuring Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato!

Coming to Theaters - The Secretariat

Saw the trailer for this one and I must say I am super excited about seeing it!

Based on the remarkable true story, “Secretariat” chronicles the spectacular journey of the 1973 Triple Crown winner. Housewife and mother Penny Chenery (Diane Lane) agrees to take over her ailing father’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables, despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge. Against all odds, Chenery—with the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich)—manages to navigate the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and what may be the greatest racehorse of all time.

Notes:

In 1973, Secretariat became the first U.S. Triple Crown champion in 25 years, setting race records that still stand today in the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes.
Penny Chenery, now 87, is an integral resource in the making of the film. She also appears as an extra in one of the film’s scenes.
In 1973, Secretariat graced the covers of three magazines the same week: Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated.
Director Randall Wallace, whose directorial credits include “We Were Soldiers,” is the Oscar®- and Golden Globe®-nominated screenwriter of “Braveheart.”

The Last Song on DVD and Blu-Ray

Entertainment: The Last Song starring Disney's very own Miley Cyrus, A/K/A Hannah Montana and Greg Kinnear (Oscar®
nominee, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, As Good As It Gets, 1997, Little Miss Sunshine, You've Got Mail). If you're raising a teenage daughter, knows someone who is raising a teenage daughter, or face raising a teenage daughter in your future I would highly recommend this one! It is an emotional roller coaster. As the movie begins, Miley's character Ronnie is a complete and total spoiled brat who back talks her father and is mean to just about every single person she comes across. She's harsh and rude. As events unfold in the movie we learn why she has hardened her heart just as it begins to soften up. It is a great "coming of age" movie, to be very cliche. It will probably make you cry...well, it made ME cry. It is an awesome movie. I have not read the book, so before you ask me how different it was, I cannot say. The screen play was written by best selling novelist and screen writer Nicolas Sparks who also wrote The Notebook!

Disney's Newest and Upcoming Releases

My family and I are fans of Disney. In fact, I'm not sure our television remote would even change the channel from Disney if we tried! Sometimes on the rare occasion that the kiddos are gone and hubby and I are sitting around the house we find ourselves watching Sonny with a Chance, Handy Manny, or Mickey Mouse!

Over the weekend I took the kids to see Disney/Pixar's latest masterpiece, Toy Story 3. I must admit that it was my favorite of the "trilogy" thus far! I really enjoyed the mixture of comedy, drama, and action. There were lots of new characters introduced and the story line was very intriguing and I found myself wrapped up in the unfolding drama wondering what was going to happen with the "Toys" as Andy was off to college! Of course I got teary eyed. I don't think there's a Disney movie that I haven't cried over at one point in my life. I admit that I am a true sap! Anyhow, if you've not seen this one yet, add it to the list. The 3D effect was nothing awe inspiring to me. I could have watched it without spending the extra money but to see Buzz, Woddy, Jesse, and the gang in all of their wide screened glory was pretty cool. Oh, and the trailers were awesome in 3-D as well as the Pixar "short" that preceded the movie, Day and Night:

I'm excited about this one as I am a huge fan of Nick Cage. Seeing this trailer in 3D was pretty darned cool!!!

When I saw this trailer I immediately knew it was the story of Rapunzel! How fun. I can't wait to see this one. It looks like a blast!

Movie Night: Fantastic Mr Fox

The kids and I took the opportunity to have a "movie night" and decided that our feature film would be Fantastic Mr Fox (rated PG).   The voice talents of George Clooney and Meryl Streep enticed me. The fact that it was animated had the kids hook, line, and sinker. Based on the beloved best-selling book by Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Fantastic Mr. Fox is all around entertainment for the entire family! Bill Murray (Lost In Translation), Owen Wilson (Marley & Me) and Willem Dafoe (Spiderman triology) also voice some pretty hilarious characters in this film.

It had a sort of Ocean's Eleven feel to it for me. Maybe it was the spectacularly sexy Clooney voice that did it. I also think that some of the story line, such as the different plots for the greatest heist the animal world has ever seen. The dialogue in this movie was witty and the characters were laughable and eccentric, especially the mole and the rat!

If you're looking for a DVD to watch with the entire family, we think you should give this one a try. We liked it!

Free Willy Escape From Pirate's Cove Review

Well, isn't she a beauty?!? I think so and I just know her father would have been so proud of her. I'm talking about Bindi Irwin. She's such a sweet and very talented little girl. When I saw the trailer to Free Willy Escape From Pirate's Cove I was intrigued but even more so when I realized that Bindi Irwin, the daughter of the late great Steve Irwin was in it. I remember watching the first Free Willy movie when it came to DVD. I was excited to show this one to my children. They were just as excited to watch!

Irwin plays Kirra who leaves her Australian home to vacation for the summer with her father, played by Beau Bridges in South Africa. Kirra discovers a baby orca who has become stranded in the lagoon near her grandfather's run down amusement park. She takes it upon herself to return the whale who she names Willy to his pod in order to keep a rival theme park owner from using him as an attraction in his park.

Jackson also ventures out on his own only to realize that he's renting a "fixer upper" from the infamous Rrrrrrrrrrico! This DVD contains six episodes including the one hour Season 3 finale.

The Penguins of Madagascar

You first enjoyed their crazy antics on the Madagascar movies. The penguin's shenanigans were so widely popular in the movies that they became the stars of their own television television show on Nickelodeon. In fact, their show was the #1 serires premiere ever for the network as well as the #1 animated program in October for kids ages 2-11. The Boys Are Back

If you're looking for a good stay at home, curl up on the couch kinda movie, THIS IS IT!!! This movie had me filled with emotion from the very beginning. This is an amazing story of an independent sportswriter who is struck with immense, life altering tradgedy. This film is actually inspired by the true story of Australian Simon Carr. The Boys are Back DVD includes exclusive bonus features: a behind-the-scenes photographic tour and a visit with the three special guys who lived the story. Clive Owen does an amazing portrayal of this man who loses his wife and is suddenly left with the responsibility of raising two sons while dealing with his own grief. This movie made me laugh and cry (A LOT!). This is your only warning that you will need a box of tissues to get you through this one. I watched this movie only days after the death of my sister-in-law's sister who had a 12 year old daughter. So, already my emotions were a little crazy. Valentines Day DVDs

If you're looking for some Valentine's Day gift ideas for your sweeties I have some suggestions. DVDs make awesome gifts because unlike candy once you get to the end, you can start all over! Now Available from Disney DVD, Winnie The Pooh: A Valentine for You and I ♥ Jonas.

This Winnie the Pooh DVD contains three special episodes: A Valentine for You, An Unvalentine's Day, and My Hero. It also includes a fun bonus feature, Catch the Love Bug Game as well as Valentine's Day cards for your little ones.

~~Our~~ My favorite story on this DVD was most definitely A Valentine For You. Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, and Rabbit see Christopher Robin making a valentine for a girl and find he's been bitten by a "Smitten" and is lovesick. Worried that he'll no longer have time for them, and hoping a second bite from the love bug will cure him, they set out on a wild adventure to capture the Smitten. This was a cute story and quite believable since I have a 7 and a 4 year old child. We talk about "cooties" all of the time around here and this story made me chuckle to think of the silly things that kids will come up with, and believe! The run-time on this DVD is 60 minutes. It will go fast though as there are three episodes. Grab ya some conversations hearts and tropical punch and enjoy an hour of fun with your kids! This DVD is on shelves NOW!

I ♥ Jonas will most definitely be a score for the Jonas fan in your family. It contains 155 minutes of genuine Jo Bros! Shelby, my 7 year old was completely stoked when she found out about this one. This DVD contains seven episodes of the hit Disney television show, Jonas. It also includes a bonus episode, You've Just Been Jo Bro'd - Jordin Sparks. Which I loved because I am a huge Jordin Sparks fan. The DVD also contains (while supplies last) magnets featuring each of the Jonas Brothers. Yes, that was a tween girl screaming in the background! :)

I ♥ Jonas will hit the shelves on Tuesday, January 26. If you plan to get this one, I would suggest getting it early because it's sure to be a hot item this Valentines Day!

My kids are huge fans of the "Buddy" movies. It started back in 1997 with Air Bud who played every sport imaginableW. In 2006, a batch of puppies emerged who each have their own unique personality. B-Dawg, Budderball, Buddha, Mudbud, and Rosebud embark on a journey to save Christmas in this action packed DVD, Santa Buddies: The Legend of Santa Paws available NOW from Disney. It's available in the ever popular Blu-Ray Combo pack so you can have the Blu-Ray disk for your home entertainment systems and the DVD for your kids to watch on the go. When Puppy Paws, the son of Santa Paws gets tired of the North Pole, he checks the naughty list and finds Budderball's name at the top of the list. He decides to pay a visit to some "ordinary" pups to find out how they live. When the world forgets the true meaning of Christmas and the North Pole begins to melt, it's up to the pups to save Christmas. Since we've received this DVD we've watched it too many times to count. Fun With Balloons!

Some people might call it sappy and sweet while others could call it sappy and disgusting, but I found the latest creation from Disney Pixar, UP to be wonderfully funny. I could relate so much to the characters in the movie. I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 10 years and I cannot imagine living my life without him. While watching this movie, I will be the first to admit that I did get a little misty eyed and NO, it's not the first Disney movie to make me cry. I'm a complete and total wreck when it comes to watching movies and even television shows because I tend to relate to much to the characters and put myself in their shoes. But, I digress. If you didn't get the opportunity to go watch Up on the big screen in Digital 3-D then you'll just have to settle for a regular showing of this beautifully animated masterpiece!

After a minor altercation with the construction crew who is building a strip mall where his neighborhood used to be, Carl Fredricksen is being forced into a retirement home. The 78 year old retired balloon salesmen decides to take matters into his own hands to avoid this inevitable disaster by tying thousands of balloons to his house and "floating" Up Up and away to his dream disaster in South America. Unfortunately, Carl has a stowaway who just so happens to be a very annoying 8 year old "Wilderness Scout" who is trying to get a badge for helping an old person. This movie had me crying and laughing all the way through. There are some very interesting characters in this film, including Carl's house which becomes a very "BIG" part of the movie as well as Dug, the talking..."Squirrel"...(oh sorry) dog as well as Kevin, a large flightless bird.

If you're looking for stocking stuffer ideas, this would be a great one. It's available now on Disney DVD and Blue Ray with TONS of bonus features including two shorts, Dug's Special Mission, and the Many Endings of Munz as well as Adventure is out there, a documentary telling the film makers trek to South America for film research.

It’s a tricky question and an even trickier answer because there are so many variables to consider. For instance:

• How big are the balloons?
• How heavy is the object?
• How quickly to do you want the object to rise Up?

We have come Up with a general formula you can use to figure out how many balloons it would take to lift... well, just about anything!

• Helium has a lifting force of about 1 gram per liter.
• An average size party balloon is approximately 30cm (one foot) in diameter.
• It can hold approximately 14 liters.
• That’s 14 grams of lift power per balloon.
• Estimate and subtract the weight of the string and the latex balloon.
• Formula: 1 balloon = 10 grams of lift power.

This figure can vary in terms of quantity of balloons given the size and scale of the house. Let’s say the house in Disney/Pixar ’s movie Up weighed about 46,000 kg (that’s 101,413 lbs). That means it takes approximately 4,600,000 balloons to send Carl's home Up and away!

Scrooged in 3D

Shelby and I went to the IMAX theater to see Disney's A Christmas Carol in 3D. We took pictures in our awesome 3D glasses where Shelby declared me "Geek of the week" in mine. I'm certain that is not a good thing. I know that all of you are on the edge of your seats while reading this waiting on my review of the movie. For those of you who are friends with me on Facebook you have already gotten insight about the movie and my strong opinion of it. For those of you who haven't, here goes...

We all know that my family and I are huge Disney fans. I have been collecting Disney movies long before my children were even thought of. This movie was not your typical Disney movie. We've seen Mickey's portrayal of Marley in Mickey's Christmas Carol, as I'm sure you have. This movie is quite the opposite. It's a very dark and drab movie. Don't get me wrong, the special effects are out of this world!!! The snow fall seemed to be falling right on the tip of your nose as you looked through those very "geek of the weekish" 3D glasses. At one point I was cupping my hands in front of me as to catch the snow when I was informed by my 6 year old that the snow would melt as soon as it hit my hand, so there was no need. The movie begins with the death of Scrooge's business partner, Marley who later visits Scrooge as a ghost to inform him that he will be haunted by three ghosts. At one point, Marley's chin becomes unattached from his face leaving his mouth wide open. This was the time when Shelby informed me that she couldn't see (there was no one in front of her) and she needed to sit in my lap. I knew immediately that she was scared. After all, it creeped me out a bit. He was trying to hold his chin up with his hand so that he could talk, and it became a bit comical for a lot of adults in the audience but I heard several other children telling their mothers that they were scared.

Shortly after the visit from the first ghost, the next ghost who happened to be the ghost of Christmas' past came for his visit. This one was but a flame with a gown on who flew him around. This point in the movie contained some of the best 3D special effects when they flew over the town, but this ghost was a bit odd and sort of resembled the leprechaun from Lucky Charms. He only spoke in a whisper. He looked the most like Jim Carey than any other character in the movie (short of the young Ebeneezer) and he was just, well weird. There was a cool scene when Ebeneezer tried to extinguish him and it causes him to sail up into the air like a rocket on a candle snuffer. He flies up in front of the moon similar to the scene in E.T. The whole theater laughed at this one, myself included.

In the visit from the Ghost of Christmas Present, one of the scariest scenes occurred. But, let me start out by saying that the laugh was really over the top. He laughed throughout most of his screen time and it was incessantly annoying. More cool special effects were brought to life when the floor of the house disappeared as they traveled over the city which made for a pretty cool feel in those 3D glasses. It felt like you were actually in the house with the two characters. Of course at this point in the movie, Ebeneezer finds out that if he continues down the path that he's been leading it will lead to the demise of little Timmy, Cratchett's son. We begin to see ole Scrooge's heart warm during these scenes and the tone of the movie starts to take a turn upward, but not much! Once the Ghost of Christmas Present finishes his presentation to Scrooge, he begins to disappear (which is also a very gruesome and graphic scene). But, not before we see a hand sticking out from under his long coat. It is then that we are introduced to two characters who were a total scare factor. Shelby and I both were a bit skiddish at this point in the movie. I won't go into details too much as to ruin the effect for those of you who might want to see this one. But, suffice it to say that it's just creepy!!!

The ghost of Christmas Future is none other than the Grim Reaper himself. We never see his face, only a long robe and bony fingers. His presence is known when Ebeneezer sees two black horses with red eyes pulling a carriage. They begin as a shadow on the wall and emerge from the shadows to scare the crap out of you. Yes, I admit that I jumped! This ensues a chase scene that seemed to last forever. Once again, more awesome special effects and at one point, Scrooge shrinks down smaller than a mouse. He sees his own dead body and more sadness and dreary scenes take place. He is called an ass by his nephew and forsees the future of the Cratchett family. At this point he begs the final ghost to get him back to his bed and promises that he is a changed man.

In the end, of course he is changed and the movie ends on a happy note, with the famous, "God Bless us, Everyone" line by Timmy but it takes a lot of darkness and death to get there. It's just not a movie that I would take my kids to see. Parents, take heed the warning on the trailer that this movie "may not" be suitable for younger viewers. I will agree, this movie is NOT suitable for younger viewers! If had seen the movie prior to taking my 6 year old, we would have waited for the next bit 3D release, maybe Alice in Wonderland?

Seth Rogen does an amazing job in this one, but it should come as no surprise to his fans. If you didn't catch this one on the big screen I would highly recommend watching. How To Lose A Guy, Deluxe Edition

Anything starring the hottie, Matthew McConaughey is going to be A+ in my book. Throw some Kate Hudson in the mix, and you've got yourself an instant hit! This is one movie that I can watch with my husband and we both enjoy! I get some eye candy, so does he and we can both relate to the story line. Now available from Paramount Home Entertainment: How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days, Deluxe Edition.
