Thirteen Superstitions I Find Laughable

1. Superstition also declares that if a moon is shining at the time of birth, the child will be a male; no moon at all indicates a girl.
Well, I for one think it'd be a little easier to tell this, maybe by I dunno...looking between their legs!

2. When a baby leaves its mother's room for the first time, it should be carried upstairs before it is carried downstairs, in order to ensure its success in the world.
And just what if there are no stairs!

3. It is unlucky to wash a baby's head for the first twelve months.
OMG...PLEASE no. I can't imagine that someone would not wash their kid's head for a year!!!

4. Washing a child's hand's before his first birthday will take away his riches and would live and die poor.

Okay, I gotta draw the line somewhere. Mine can't go for a DAY! Nuh-uh!

5. Children's first lost teeth are burned in order to prevent snaggle teeth from coming in.
We all know that the tooth fairy takes those!!!

6. Coral necklaces are worn to ensure easy teething.

I'm game if it helps quiet the screaming!

7. All locks in a house are unlocked at birthing to ensure an easy delivery.
Oh, so THAT'S what happened...I've got deadbolts!

8. If the finger or toe nails of an infant are cut previous to the age of 12 months, it will prove a thief in mature age.
Oh, yeah this will work well with #4. Imagine the dirt! Ugh!

9. Babies born at three, six, nine, or twelve o'clock are said to be exceptionally lucky. When they are grown up it is declared that they will be gifted with considerably more insight and ingenuity than the average person.
Hmmm...this one left me speechless, really!

10. If a child is born with teeth there is a superstition that it will become extremely selfish.
I'd say this baby was late if it was born with teeth!! Is this even possible?

11. For a child to be born with an open hand, however, is a sign of great generosity.

Do their hands ever close? *LOL*

12. For the child to cry at the christening is considered a fortunate sign, for people in the olden days thought that evil spirits were then leaving the baby's body.

It couldn't have anything to do with the water you just poured on their head, right?!

13. Children's first lost teeth are burned in order to prevent snaggle teeth from coming in.
Man, I'd be willing to bet that the tooth fairy would NOT go for this one. Do teeth burn?

Thirteen Secret House Cleaning Tips for Unexpected Company:

SECRET TIP 1: DOOR LOCKS
If a room clearly can't be whipped into shape in 30 days--much
less 30 minutes--employ the Locked Door Method of cleaning.
Tell anyone who tries to go in the room that the door is
intentionally locked.
CAUTION: It is not advisable to use this tip for the bathroom.
Time: 2 seconds

SECRET TIP 2: DUCT TAPE
No home should be without an ample supply. Not only is it
handy for plumbing repairs, but it's a great way to hem
drapes, tablecloths, clothes, just about anything. No muss, no
fuss.
Time: 2-3 minutes

SECRET TIP 3: OVENS
If you think ovens are just for baking, think again. Ovens
represent at least 9 cubic feet of hidden storage space, which
means they're a great place to shove dirty dishes, dirty
clothes, or just about anything you want to get out of sight
when company's coming.
Time: 2 minutes

SECRET TIP 4: CLOTHES DRYERS
Like Secret Tip 3, except bigger.
CAUTION: Avoid hiding flammable objects here.
Time: 2.5 minutes

SECRET TIP 5: WASHING MACHINES & FREEZERS
Like Secret Tip 4, except even bigger.
Time: 3 minutes

SECRET TIP 6: DUST RUFFLES
No bed should be without one. Devotees of Martha Stewart
believe dust ruffles exist to keep dust out from under a bed
or to help coordinate the colorful look of a bedroom. The rest
of us know a dust ruffle's highest and best use is to hide
whatever you've managed to shove under the bed. (Refer to
Secret Tips 3, 4, 5.)
Time: 4 minutes

SECRET TIP 7: DUSTING
The 30-Minutes-To-A-Clean-House method says: Never dust under
what you can dust around.
Time: 3 minutes

SECRET TIP 8: DISHES
Don't use them. Use plastic or paper and you won't have to.
Time: 1 minute

SECRET TIP 9: VACUUMING
Stick to the middle of the room, which is the only place
people look. Don't bother vacuuming under furniture. It takes
way too long and no one looks there anyway.
Time: 5 minutes, entire house; 2 minutes, living room only

SECRET TIP 10: LIGHTING
The key here is low, low, and lower. It's not only romantic,
but bad lighting can hide a multitude of dirt.
Time: 10 seconds

SECRET TIP 11: BED MAKING
Get an old-fashioned waterbed. No one can tell if those things
are made up or not, saving you hundreds of seconds over the
course of a lifetime. Never mind if you actually like to sleep on it!
Time: 0

SECRET TIP 12: SHOWERS, TOILETS, AND SINKS
Forget one and two. Concentrate on three.
Time: 1 minute

SECRET TIP 13:
If you already knew at least 10 of these tips, don't even
think about inviting a Martha Stewart type to your home.

Thirteen Things In The Floor
I've been sick since last Thursday and my husband and children seem to forget to pick up after themselves. Yesterday I got tired of looking at it all so I decided to pick things up. These are a few things I picked up and returned to their proper place.

1. Legos - 120 of the large ones. I know this b/c the bag was laying on top of them and it said that it contained 120.

2. Shoes - Multiple pairs of shoes. Two children and one husband x 4 days = A LOT OF DAMN SHOES!!!

3. Books - I did not count how many "book order" paper back books I picked up, but there were lots of them. The kids both love to "read" but they don't know how to put a book back on a shelf!

4. Belt - My daughter is a skinny minny with long legs so we have to buy her pants a bit big in the waist so they will fit her in the length. This forces her to wear belts which she hates. When she gets home, she sheds them where she may. Unfortunately that metal prong that holds the belt together is not nice to your foot in the middle of the night when it pokes through as you step on it! :(

5. Salt - I was told by the doctor to use a Vaporizer to help loosen this stuff in my chest. I have to add salt to the water to create steam. I had left the container of salt in the floor (good place for it 'eh?!). Okay, so one thing out of 13 that was my fault...I picked it up anyhow!!!

6. Valentine's Chocolate (wrappers) - Unfortunately either the kids or the dog had finished off the candy. I'm inclined to think it was the kids b/c if the dog ate it he would have eaten the candy, wrapper and all.

7. Clean Clothes - I did some laundry Sunday since I felt a bit better then. Unfortunately the good feeling didn't last long. The last load that I didn't get folded has somehow gotten strewn throughout the living room. Which leads me to #8.

8. Clothes Basket - I'm pretty sure that the kids dumped the clothes out so that they could put the clothes basket over the dog and trap him in. That is hours of fun for them!

9. Dog Toys - Oscar, the wiener dog is not to be left out. He has several toys that he loves to play with and he likes to leave them in the walk ways instead of under couches or in corners where I try to hide toss them.

10. Sippie Cups - The kiddos have milk before bed and usually when they wake in the mornings. Most of the time they're pretty good about putting their cups in the sink, but every once in a great while one will hide in the crack of the couch or underneath and believe me, when those things sit there more than a day or two with milk still inside, it's worth the $1.29 to just toss it and buy another!!!

11. French Fries - Unfortunately while I've felt so horrible there has been no cooking around here. My kids love "french fries and chicken nuggets" from the golden arches. Somehow or another there was a french fry in the floor that Oscar didn't sniff out. Or maybe this thing was just so nasty he didn't want to have anything to do with that!

12. Happy Meal Toys - See #11. (These things make their way to the trash when the kids aren't looking, especially when we have 3 or 4 of the same ones...that's sad isn't it?!)

13. Hats - Hubby wears a ball cap to work just about every day. Trouble is that when he takes his hat off at night, Tyler nabs it. From there, it usually ends up in the middle of the floor for Mom (that's me) to pick up unless I want to hear hubby yell the next day, "Honey, have you seen my hat?!"

Here's to getting well...so my list will not be as long next time I have to venture through the abyss!!!

Mental Fung Shui to get you through the holidays

1. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

2.
Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.

3. Don't judge people by their relatives.

4. When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, 'Why do you want to know?'

5. Say 'God bless you' when you hear someone sneeze.

6. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and Responsibility for all your actions.

7. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it

8. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.

9. Enjoy your family, but don't forget to spend some time alone.

10. Remember the true meaning of Christmas. It's not about how perfect your tree is trimmed, or if the dishes match the towels, etc. It's about celebrating the birth of Christ WITH YOUR FAMILY! Take it easy...relax and enjoy the season.

11. It's more fun to give that receive.

12. Talk slowly but think quickly.

13. Remember it's Merry Christmas, NOT "Happy Holiday" and don't forget that we're not celebrating "X"...spell it out, it doesn't take that much longer to keep Christ in Christmas. ;)

Merry Christmas to you and yours!!!
