Conversations with Shelby

♥ This conversation takes place in the truck on our way home from school. ♥

Shelby: "Mommy, we talked about Christmas today at school."

Me: "You did, that's cool. So, what did you guys talk about?"

Shelby: "**Insert child's name** doesn't believe in Christmas and we talked about no all people believing in Christmas or in God. "

Me: *Gulp and then begin to panic*...long silence...thinking what do I say to this?!
Responds, "Well, that's true baby some people don't believe in God. But, we do. We have to respect what other people believe even if it's different than us."

Shelby: "Do you believe in God?"

Me: "Of course I do. If there was no a God, how did we get here?"

Shelby: "From our Moms."

Me: "Ummm...yes, but God created a mom a long long time ago."

Shelby: "Yeah, probably so. Then those people killed baby Jesus. I wish they wouldn't have killed baby Jesus, mommy. He was just a baby."

Oh, I know...the conversations are only going to get harder tougher right?!

Conversations With Shelby

We were in the truck and Shelby was watching Disney's High School Musical. This girl is in love with this movie! Here's how the conversation went:

Shelby:
Mommy, look at my face. It's really sad.

Me:
What's the matter, sweetie? Why are you really sad?

Shelby:
(Now with tears streaming down her cheeks)
I'm sad because Gabriella is mad at Troy and she won't talk to him!

Me:
(Trying not to laugh)
Shelby, you've watched this show a zilion times and you know that she won't be mad at him for long. She forgives him soon.

Shelby:
(sobbing uncontrollably)
I know, but I don't want her to get mad at Troy because they're friends!

***Today we were watching and she told me she wouldn't cry this time because she knew that they would be friends in the end and that Gabriella wouldn't be mad at him long because friends don't give up on one another. ***

Conversations with Shelby

Shelby: I am pretty much going to be a Vegetarian.

Me: laughs out loud Shelby do you know what a vegetarian is???

Shelby:
Of course I do...someone who takes care of animals.

Brien: (I was laughing too hard at this point to respond) No, Shelby that's a veterinarian.

Shelby: Well, that's what I am talking about.

Brien: A vegetarian is someone who doesn't eat meat...only eats vegetables.

Shelby: Why in the world would someone want to do that?!?!

This girl is a mess! To read more conversations with this silly six year old, click here.

Conversations with Shelby

Shelby and I spent a great deal of time out and about Sunday afternoon shopping. We had a wonderful "mother/daughter" afternoon. She is so fun to spend time with because she is just at that age (5.5) where she thinks that she is so grown up and her conversations are so fun. As we waited in line to eat our lunch I decided that she might end up as a futures broker because she has finances all figured out.

Shelby: Mommy, some day I will be a grown up like you.

Me: Yes, you sure will honey. How will you know when you are a grown up like me?

Shelby: Because I will have lots of credit cards in my wallet and then I can buy YOU lunch.

Now, this is a child who has the world all mapped out!

Conversations with Shelby

Shelby (to her dad):  Whoa, don't go in the bathroom for a while.  It stinks in there.

Brien:  Why does it stink in there.

Shelby:  You'd better be glad you don't do my laundry!

Brien:  Why is that?!

Shelby:  'Cause I've got some serious diarrhea and if you had to wash my clothes, you'd know that!

Me:  *Groan*  I do your laundry!

Shelby:  *Giggles*  I know.  You'll find out what I'm talking about.

Conversations Overheard

Shelby spent Saturday night with my sister. Tyler was at Grandma's house. Hubby and I went out for a "date night". We did a bit of shopping for Shelby's birthday and I went to Victoria's Secret. No, I didn't buy any sexy lingerie just some much needed bras, but I digress.

On the way home, Tyler had his goodie bag from Katie's party. He was eating some candy from the bag and this conversation began between he and his big sister.

Tyler: I'm eatin' my candy from the party.

Shelby: Can I have some?

Tyler: Yup, I'll share. But, you can't eat it all.

Shelby: Well, if you give it all to me then it's your own fault.

Tyler: Shelby, did you say fart?

Shelby: *laughs and slaps herself on the forehead* No, Tyler I said FAULT, not fart. Falt, like it's yours if you give me all of your candy, not mine!

Tyler: Shelby, you said fart. You're getting on my nervous.

Conversations with Tyler

It was about fifteen minutes until 8:00pm, our children's bedtime.  They were all three in Shelby's room.  Their daddy had told them to come in the living room and settle down because it was almost bedtime.

Tyler:  Daddy did you call us?

Brien:  Yes, it's time to settle down and get ready for bed.

Tyler:  But, we're cleaning Shelby's room.

Brien:  Well, finish up and then you guys come in here and settle down.

...Enter Shelby...

Brien:  Shelby, ya'll get your room cleaned so that you can settle down and get ready for bed.

Shelby:  We're not cleaning my room, we're playing.

Brien:  Well, it's time to settle down, ya'll get in here.

...as they exited the living room to put away their toys, we heard Tyler whispering to Shelby:

Why did you tell them the truth?!?!  You were supposed to trick 'em and say we were cleaning that way they won't make us get out of your room!

This kid has it all figured out doesn't he?!  Pretend to be cleaning and the parents are none the wiser.  No parent is going to stop their child from cleaning.  We've got our work cut out for us with this one!

Conversations

♥This conversation takes place in my recliner with Shelby on one knee and Tyler on the other♥

Me: I think I need to go take some cough medicine. I don't feel good. My throat hurts, and I can't stop coughing.

Shelby: But, Mommy you can't be sick?

Me: Why is that, Shelby?

Shelby: Because Mommies can't get sick. They have to take care of Daddies and the kids. You can't do that when you are sick, Mommy!

♥ This conversation takes place in the truck on her way to school. ♥

Shelby: "Mom I don't want to go to school today."

Me: "Why?"

Shelby: "Because they make me take a nap. When I take a nap, my hair will get messed up and I will stink."

Me: "Well, you can re do your hair when you wake up. Why will you stink?"

Shelby:
"I can't do my hair because I DON'T have a brush at school. I will stink because my breath always stinks when I wake up!"

Conversations with Shelby and her Classmates

Last weekend Shelby and I were home alone. The two younger kids were staying with Grandma and Daddy was out of town. We took the opportunity to rent some movies and have some time relaxing together. One of the movies we rented was Aliens in the Attic. She was discussing her weekend with two of her school mates.
Shelby: I got to watch Aliens in the Attic this weekend. It was so funny.

Classmate #1: I've watched that one before. I loved the part when they said, who turned off the gravity?!

Classmate #2: You can't watch that because it's PG13 and you're NOT 13.

Shelby: I did watch it, with my Mom.

Classmate #2: Well, I can only watch PG13 movies with my Mom and she covers my eyes on the "bad parts".

I love to listen to the conversations these kids have when they think no one is listening. I hear all sorts of things, from who is suffering from CONCERTA and ADHD Symptoms to guessing what that actually was on their lunch plate. Oh, to be young again!  FYI, the movie is PG and it was pretty good.  There weren't any "eye covering" parts.  ;)

Conversations With Shelby

Shelby: "When I grow up I want to be a Princess, a Ballerina, a Doctor, & a Teacher

Me: "Wow, that's a lot of things. Which thing do you want to be the most?"

Shelby: "Ummm...a Princess and a Ballerina. They are the most fun."

Me: "Hmmm...but if you were a teacher you could teach lots of little girls and boys. If you were a doctor, you could learn a whole lot and help sick kids."

Shelby: "Yeah, but a Princess and a Ballerina would be more fun. I'll do those first and then maybe be a Teacher or a Doctor."

Conversations Overheard

As I was making dinner Tuesday night, Emily was doing her regular routine. She was crawling in and out from under my feet from cabinet to cabinet playing in the pots and pans, and plastic bowl lids. Tyler saw her doing this and decided to join in on the fun. He went to Shelby's room and began to bring things from her play kitchen set, fake food, utensils, etc. Once Shelby saw him doing this she quickly joined in on the play. They had a full on kitchen right in the middle of the kitchen floor (as I tried to make a real dinner). Then the conversation ensued:

Shelby: Tyler I am going to the store. We have to make a list first.

Tyler: *bantering about what to put on the list* Eggs, milk, bread...we need everything. We can go when I finish cooking.

(I don't know what he was cooking if he needed everything...)

Shelby: Okay, I am going to get the babies ready. *She begins putting babies in "car seats".

Later on, I suppose they have already made it to the store when I hear Tyler firmly declare: "No, Shelby we cannot buy that. It is NOT on sale!"

This is the influence I've had on my children! *LOL*

Conversations with Shelby

Shelby helped me clean out my closet yesterday. It was full of things that I can no longer wear. (That's a whole 'nother post). BUT, she was a big help to me and we had a fun time. She had way more fun trying on my clothes and shoes than I did. For me it was depressing, for her it was cool. She has inherited my love for shoes. This conversation ensued during our shoe sorting.

Shelby: Mommy, you've got a lotta lotta shoes!

Me: Yes, I love to buy shoes. But, a lot of times I get them home and then I never wear them.

Shelby: Well, I would wear them. I love them all.

Me: I keep them because you never know when you might need a cute pair of clear glass looking slippers, or a nice pair of boots.

Shelby:
I wish that my feet was the same size as you so that I can wear all of your shoes.

Me: ...and I am so glad that they're not. I'd never have any shoes to wear AND you'd look silly with big feet like mine right now.

Later on in the evening I went into her room and found three pair of my shoes in her room. It looks like it doesn't really matter if they fit or not. *wink*

Conversations with Shelby

Shelby: Mommy, Ms Shannon is going to burn off our class CD from graduation.

Me: Burn it, Why?

Shelby: Mom, not burn like fire. She is going to make a copy of it on CD.

Me: Thanks for clearing that up.

Later that evening she was in a public restroom and as she was taking care of business she proceeds to tell me:

Shelby: Mommy, when I poop fresh air comes out of my butt!

Me: Well, there's air comin' out of there but it ain't fresh.

Shelby:
Does air come out of your butt when you poop?

Me: (hearing laughter from the stall next to us) Just hurry up and finish with your fresh air, my dear!

Conversations Overheard

We've had a couple of days of rain here and the mosquitoes are really thick around here. When we were getting in the truck this morning a few made their way into our vehicle. On the way to daycare, Shelby was a bit freaked out when one landed on her. I told her to slap it and kill it. She did NOT want it to "suck her blood" but she was not going to touch it either. A conversation ensued between she and her brother in the back seat on the way into daycare.

Shelby: Check your body, Tyler. Hurry, check your body for those blood sucking bugs!!

Tyler: Shelby, I don't have a body.

Shelby: Yes you do, Tyler check your body to make sure you don't have bugs on it.

Tyler: Shelby, I don't have a body I have balls!

I'm so glad his dad taught him the proper terminology for his male parts!

Birthdays, Dates, and Adult Conversations!

Yesterday my neice Katie had a High School Musical birthday party. She'x not six just yet. She will turn 6 on Tuesday. She was an early birthday present for her Auntie Tisha 6 years ago, she was born the day before my birthday!!! The kiddos had a fun time eating pizza, cake, and playing games. I got to play my sister at air hockey. I always have fun doing that. She tries so hard, but sorry Mandy you'll never beat me!!!! Mwaaaahhhhaaa...the funny part is that she also played my daughter, Shelby and she didn't beat her either. Mandy is good at a lot of things, but air hockey is not one of them. heh heh heh

What I do love about my sister Mandy and her daughter Katie is that they Shelby (who will celebrate her sixth birthday on the 29th). Shelby loves them as well. They took her home with them yesterday so Shelby could help Katie break in all of her new toys. Tyler and little Emily Grace went home with my mother in law (who I could not survive without!).

Brien and I took this opportunity to have a date night. We went shopping for Shelby's birthday. We had a lovely time and ended the evening with a wonderful dinner where I enjoyed two yummy strawberry margaritas and wonderful adult conversation. I almost felt impelled to cut Brien's parmesean encrusted talapia for him, though since I had no children to tend to. It was a nice time for us, and I was glad to get a good night's sleep and get to sleep in a bit this morning as well.

How did you spend your Saturday and what about your Sunday? It's about time to go get the kiddos, so I had better get dressed and head out. Have a lovely day, everyone! See you tomorrow for Manic Monday where I just might break out into a story about talking watches.

Shelby: Mom, what's my second name?

Me: You mean your middle name? It's Lynn.

Shelby: Yes, my middle name. Shelby Lynn Black. That's my whole name.

Me: You have the same middle name as daddy.

Shelby: Daddy Black Lynn? That's a funny name.

Me: (Laughs) No, silly Brien Lynn Black is is real name. Daddy is just what you call him.

Conversations with Shelby

Brien and I picked the kiddos up from daycare today and did a bit of shopping afterward.

Shelby had her usual hand full of papers when we picked her up and one particular drawing caught her daddy's eye.

"Shelby, this is a great drawing.  It looks like you worked hard on this one."  he announced.

"Dad, I did NOT do that drawing.  I don't have skills."  Shelby boldly proclaimed.

As it turns out, her teacher had drawn it for her.  But, to hear her declare that she does not have skills cracked me up!

Conversations with Shelby - "The Moon"

Brien was sitting on the porch swing out front with the kids.  They were watching the sun set.  Shelby explained to her father the meaning behind the sun setting.

Dad:  The sun is setting over there behind those clouds.  It's going to bed.

Shelby:  Dad, the sun is NOT going to bed.  God is taking the sun back.

Dad:  He is, why is he taking it back?

Shelby:  Because he is giving it to the dead people.

Conversations with a 5 year old

This conversation takes place in our vehicle on the way to the video store to rent movies.

Shelby: Mom, I want to rent the movie with the french fry people.

Me: French Fry people? What in the world are you talking about?

Shelby: You know the one with the pig that walks on the ceiling and leaves tracks?

Me: *giggles* Do you mean, "Spider pig?"

Shelby: Yes, that's it, the movie with Spider pig.

Me: That is The Simpsons. So, why do you call them french fry people?

Shelby: Because their hair is made out of french fries.
