The 65 Roses Tour 2011

Last year my family and I were introduced to one of the most adorable little girls I'd ever seen. She has beautiful locks of golden hair and the sweetest smile that will melt your heart. When you look at little Aven, you would not know that she has an illness. She looks like a normal, vibrant 4 year old. Aven has Cystic Fibrosis, an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. You can read more about Cystic Fibrosis here.

We were given the pleasure of helping at the Family Fun Stop of the 65 Rose Tour last year.   "65 Roses" is what some children with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) call their disease because the words are much easier for them to pronounce. 65 Roses® is a registered trademark of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. You can click here read more on the story of Mary G Weiss and her volunteer efforts.  We baked 13 dozen cookies for the riders in the Family Fun Ride.

This year, we were more than thrilled to come on board as a sponsor for the Family Fun Ride!!!  Again, we had a "Betty Crocker Bake night" and this time we made 12 dozen cookies:  chocolate chip, peanut butter, snickerdoodle, and of course sugar cookies with sprinkles!  Since one of the Betty Crocker sisters was out of town, we had to make do without her.  We had lots of help, though with Shelby and Emily who loved doing the baking.

Saturday morning as we were getting ready to head out, the rain was pouring down.  Despite the forecast, the riders still came out in support of a great cause.  The temperatures were in the forties.  But, that didn't stop the family fun riders OR the volunteers!  We headed out and set up our Fun Stop in the rain.  Thankfully the DVD player in the van kept the children occupied as we set up the tent which included a gas heater right in the center that proved to be more cherished than the fresh cookies not only to the riders, but the volunteers as well who were braving the cold and rain for this awesome cause!

The tour was a great success in spite of the weather. I'd like to say a special thanks to ALL of the volunteers which make it all possible. Amber Carson, I am so proud to call you my friend. You work hard to make this event go so smoothly and I am happy to be a small part of it. Next year we will be back and this ride will be bigger and better. To see you and your entire family come together in support of Aven and others with Cystic Fibrosis is such an inspiration and I am so happy to be able to teach my children the importance of community involvement and fund raising! We must help and support each other to be productive citizens. To see more photos, or find out more information, you can click this link.

Humbled and Grateful

Photobucket
On this beautiful Sunday morning, I sit here at my computer humbled.  I am almost at a loss for words as how to describe the way I feel.  I have posted all week about Get Down Downtown and the fund raising booth we were going to have for Arkansas Susan G Komen.  We sold pink lemonade and cookies for a cause.  My mother-in-law is a God send.  I am so lucky to have such a wonderful, dedicated, hard working woman in my life!  She was on the phone and pounding the pavement all week last week collecting donated items and funds for this cause.  Thanks to her, we had gift certificates to local restaurants, jewelry stores, and even a day spa donated to us.  We sold tickets for a dollar each for a chance to win one of those prizes.  We gave breast cancer survivors free chances, of course.  (Winners have not yet been drawn)  Sexton Foods, Fanny Brown, and Classic Catering of Harding donated cookies for our cause.  Thanks to them we did not have to do any baking.  Sexton Foods donated 40 dozen cookies made fresh Thursday morning in their awesome bakery and I tell you what, people LOVED those cookies!  The pink lemonade was donated by various businesses in town as well.  We also received lots of monetary donations to which the rest of the supplies and decorations needed were purchased.  We ended up with a final tally of $950 donated at the Get Down Downtown, Main Street Celebration!

As I sat down and counted out all of those ones and fives last night, I was overwhelmed with emotion.  You see, I do not have breast cancer, in fact I have never lost a loved one to breast cancer.  I have, however, lost loved ones to other cancer.  Cancer is bad...no matter what form of it you get.  I was overwhelmed by the fact that I am surrounded by so many people filled with love. This money was not collected in one hundred dollar bills. It was mostly collected one or two dollars at a time and that is simply amazing! My family were huge supporters of this cause.  My husband worked hard to help set up this booth IN THE RAIN!!!  He also did all of the running we needed him to do no matter what we needed and when.  He never once complained.  What a trooper he was.  My mother-in-law collected donations, watched kiddos, and was there every step of the way.  She also made some awesome strawberry cupcakes with pink icing and pink ribbon sprinkles.  Those things sold like hot cakes!  They were fresh out of the oven Saturday morning.  My team mates went above and beyond to make sure this booth was successful.  Amber Carson was my booth neighbor with Re-Zest your nest so she helped me to get things set up like they needed to be and made things look nice and presentable.  If it weren't for Amber, we would not have been at Get Down Downtown, so I owe her a HUGE thank you.  My sister, Mandy was also there for the set up.  It was a bit stressful at first but once we got it all taken care of, we were golden.  She was also there ALL day Saturday.  I had to leave for a bit, and she had things under control.  April Odom, my other sister also had my back in my absence!  In fact, she and Mandy almost had things broken down when I got back and we just had to carry it all to the truck.  Thanks to the muscle of Eddie Boone, also for making that happen!  My sisters in Christ, Chelsey Dodson and Kylah Robinson were also troopers and stuck it out Saturday with us.  Without the hard work of these girls, we could have never pulled this off.  Crystal Beach also worked on Friday night while our girls were "Getting Down" at the stage having fun dancing to the live entertainment.  Words cannot say how proud I am of all who showed up and helped out, no matter how big or small you think your contribution was, it could not have happened without the hands of each individual who helped out and that is the truth.

I have many more pictures to post and much more to say on this subject, but I have another busy day ahead of me so for now I'll just leave you with a big thank you!!!

Smashing Goals For A Good Cause

Photobucket
Today was the first day of Get Down Downtown.  I've posted about it a couple of times  before.  But, it's a huge event here in Searcy, Arkansas.  Admission is free, and with three kids we are all about going to free events.  Not only is there awesome entertainment all day long, but there are over 100 vendor booths!  What an awesome event and I am so proud to be a part of it.  I have set up a fund raising booth with some of the girls from my team for the 16th annual Susan G Komen Race For The Cure.  We are selling pink lemonade, cookies, and various items to raise money to reach our team goal of $500.  I am proud to say that on the first night we have surpassed our goal.  We have raised $447.50 and we still have one more day to go.  We've raised $85 online, so we've exceeded the goal.  Perhaps we'll just double it!!!  Keep your fingers crossed for us.  If you're out and about in Searcy or nearby, come on over to Get Down Downtown, stop by and see us.  We're the both with all of the pink.  You can't miss us!!!  Quench your thirst and spoil your diet!  You can see more photos on our Facebook Fan Page and while you're there "Like" us to stay updated.

Donate for Shelby's Sake!

To donate click HERE

Shelby was seven years old when he was diagnosed with cancer. He was in second grade and began having headaches and nausea. After taking him to the doctor and a thorough exam, he was sent for a CT. After the CT, he was immediately sent to Children's Hospital where he was admitted. Shelby underwent a number of tests that were followed by surgery and then a year of radiation and chemotherapy. Shelby is now three years out from treatment and CANCER FREE!!!

Through it all, Shelby kept an amazing attitude. Of all that he had to endure, all he wanted was to be in school and do all the activities that his friends were doing. Kids going through cancer treatments have to miss out on alot of normal activities, such as school, birthday parties and just playing outside with their friends.

Three years ago Shelby attended The American Cancer Society's Cancer Camp at Camp Aldersgate for the first time - and he loved it! He has been blessed in that he does not have a lot of physical disabilities that keep him from doing normal activities. He did have to go through alot of physical therapy to regain the strength and balance that he lost through surgery and treatments. At Camp Aldersgate, disabilities are not a problem. All the activities are geared toward the abilities of the kids. The kids never feel left out because they are included in all activities. They all have been through most all the same things. They feel connected unlike they would with their other friends.

When we picked Shelby up from camp the first year, he commented, "I can't wait to go back next year." He looks forward to the application coming in the mail and the instruction letter with the theme for the camp dance.

As Shelby stated in a radio commercial for the American Cancer Society,"...camp is a place where you can forget about treatment, forget about hospitals and forget that you have cancer."

By donating to the American Cancer Society, you can help these kids make that dream come true.

I am asking all of my blogging friends if they could donate for this wonderful cause. I have a special place in my heart for the American Cancer Society and I have donated many times to this charitable cause. I know that money is tight for us all right now. If you could donate at least a dollar, I can reach my goal. Thank you all so much for your time and your donations in advance!
