Thursday Thirteen - Back 2 School (for the first time)

Archived TTs ~ TT Headquarters

Thirteen Things on my Kindergartner's School Supply List:

1. 4 Fold Rest Mat - I SO wish I could add this to my WORK supply list, although I'd need a few to cover my acerage. *LOL*
2. 2 Dab-N-Stick Glue, Sponge Top - I have YET to find these anywhere in town.
3. 1 Large White Elmer's School Glue (no gel)
4. Crayola Crayons (16 & 24 Count) - I can't find a 16 count box anywhere! Why do they need both?! My boss suggested buying two 8 count boxes and taping them together. :D
5. 2 #2 Lead Pencils (regular size) - I'm assuming that this meant 2 pencils and not 2 boxes. I bought a 20 ct box
6. Scissors (small "Fiskars" blunt tip w/metal blades)
7. 2 Large Boxes of Tissue Maybe these are for mom's on the first day of school?!
8. Crayola Washable Markers (original w/broad tip)
9. 1 - 12oz Container of Hand Sanitizer
10. 1 Lg Clorox Cleaning Wipes
11. 4 Dry Erase Markers (blue or black)
12. 2 Vinly Pocket 3 Prong Folders (1 red) I wonder why one needs to be red?
13. 1 Box of Ziploc Baggies (quart size) & 9" Regular Plain White Paper Plates I don't even know...crafts?!

On top of this extensive and very specific list we have to send a $5 supply fee!!!
I'm told this is just the begining.

I totally wish I could do this with my high schoolers. I would request groceries and shampoo and nail polish. And of course, baggies, aluminum foil, all the things my kitchen needs!!

That list worries me...my kids aren't close to Kindergarten but I'm afraid!

Let me know if you can't find those sponge tipped glues...we have them here...I can always send them along!

Holy crappoly! This is absolutely ridiculous! And I thought California was in deep doody funding wise. No wonder so many families are homeschooling....(I never could've done that - I would've killed one of them!)....

Heh. There's a $114 calculator on my teen's supply list. Among many other things.

Welcome to school!

Just the beginning. Every year the list gets more and more confusing. My suggestion when you find the crayons and the glue sticks buy extras. They color so much that I had to replace my daughters school crayons many times through out the year. Having them stashed in the house beats having to run out late at night because someone can't go to school with old crayons waiting for her in her cubbie.

For #2 try looking at your local scrapbooking store, or a Michaels or Joann Fabric/Craft Stores.

It is just the beginning! Have fun.

Have a great day.

Oh my. I dread it and look forward to it at the same time. Good luck finding you glue stick thingys. Is your little one excited?

I can't believe it is already back to school shopping time!

Don't worry...it only gets worse! LOL! High school means more expensive, more specific items for each class. Plus book fees, locker fees, gym suits, etc, etc, etc.

My DH loves to say the schools are "nickle and diming" us but it's really more than that. ~sigh~

Happy T13!

Okay, I don't have kindergartners going to school, but I had a godmother who always made sure I had a back to school supply kit every year. This is what was inside:

1. Pencils
2. Construction Paper
3. Crayola Crayons--32
4. Elmer's glue
5. Blunt Scissors
6. Erasers
7. Curly Protractor
8. Colored Pencils
9. Pencil Sharpener
10. Loose leaf Notebook paper
11. Notepads--usually colored, about 3x4
12. 3x5 Cards
13. Wacky Stickers--it was the 70s...the kinds that glowed in the dark or had bright 70s style neon colors.

Also, I've responded to your comment on my blog regarding the SezWho EntreCard partnership. Stop by and check out what others have to say as well when you get a moment.

Have an awesome day!

Don't ya love stocking classrooms with basic supplies that we used to just GET at school?

*SO* not looking forward to the days of buying school supplies!

Wow, kindergarten. Big stuff! We're not quite there yet. Gonna do either Preschool this year or Ballet classes. I'm leaning towards ballet.

It's crazy to me that the parents have to buy all of these things now. What happens to all of the tax $$ we pay? We KNOW it's not going to pay the teachers!!

Buy extra of paper, pens, pencils, etc. You can always store them for next year. I have a shelf in the closet for school supplies. Prices as Walmart and Target are really good right after school starts. Then you have a kid like mine (going into 8th grade) who loves, loves, loves school supplies. Always wants more pens or pencils and folders... Apparently you can't have too many folders.

Hi, just wanted to let you know that I emailed you last night. It should have come from denashops@yahoo.com.

Holy cow! What's up with the 2 different boxes of crayons too...what a list, it's surpising they don't have to bring their own toilet paper too! Geez!

Arlene said...

Wow that is quite a list, what does the school supply?

I so remember those days of supply lists for school. It's too bad that schools have to ask for all this stuff, but some places just can't operate without it. Do you have to provide a ream of computer/copier paper, too? My kids did.

And, I'll bet the red folder is for "important papers".

Happy TT and good luck with finding everything!

Not playing this week, but wanted to comment. I so remember these lists. Then my son would add stuff he wanted to the list. It was so expensive back then. School supplies, clothes...Oh I remember. Have a great day sweetie. Big hug and lotsa lovies. :)

Oy, when they specify the brands and counts I'm done. The only time I tried to buy school supplies for my son I obsessed about whether he'd be vilified or expelled if I bought some other brand. Fortunately our school offers packaged school supplies for all grades. The slightly higher expense is more than made up for by the convenience.

Guess who can comment again??? Yep me, so I am here to pester you. I will look for that glue think I saw it here. I swear these lists get longer and stranger every year. As a homeschooler, other than some highschool textbooks, the only other supplies I need are notebooks, we finally ran out. Oh, and the fee for driving school for that 16yo son I now have.
PS - email me with the theme for the nursery please.
Love ya, hope you are doing a-ok!

Awwwwww, Kindergarten is the best grade. I remember my kids getting their whole box of supplies and how their eyes just gleemed with excitement. Now they're older and complain all the time.

I didn't play but wanted to comment anyways!
The zip lock bags...from what I could tell from my kids little items came home in them just about every day. Left over snacks also came home in them.
And the one Red folder. The teachers here also request one folder in a color as well. I noticed it's for a subject at school...something along that line that way the kids know what that folder is for. It might also be the folder that is used to bring home the papers to you!
The lists get odder with each grade level!

Clorox Cleaning Wipes? Kids have to bring these to school now, too? What has the world come to?

I remember when all I needed was a couple of pencils, some notebook paper, and a binder but these days it seems you practically have to take a loan to send your kids off to school with everything they need!

Hmmm...
boy, as someone who taught preschool for over 25 years, I'm a bit concerned about that hand sanitizer and the wipes. I agree that they should both be in every classroom (those kids are a germy bunch!) but I don't think the children should be responsible for their own. The sanitizers are either alcohol based and toxic or non alcohol based but will cause chemical irritation if used on the face. And clorox? Speaks for itself...
Maybe there's a leap in maturity from preschool to kindergarten that makes this safe? For all kids? I doubt it.

That's a lot of stuff. I can still remember being so nervous about my first school supplies list. I was sure my mom was getting the wrong things.

LOL!

I know and my Daughter thought this summer would never end lol!

Hey Tish I just enable my SezWho last night, that thing is so cool!

I just rated every post on your main page 6 stars! You Rock!! :D

For my son's kindergarten year (his only year in public school - we've homeschooled ever since), the supply list was an entire page SINGLE SPACED! I questioned the school about it and they said the extras were for the class in general, and for any kids who didn't bring in supplies. We (the parents) were also informed that this was the *starting* list - that we'd be "required" to provide supplies all year long. And we lived in a well funded district!

That list is pretty typical. BTW, the Ziplocs and paper plates are used for lots of things including snacks, school parties, crafts, etc.
