One Week In - My Adventures With Fitbit

Watching the sunrise on a morning walk. Breathtaking!
I posted last week about being discontent in my own skin. I decided to make some changes. One of the major changes included a minor purchase. I began with a Fitbit Charge HR. If you are unfamiliar with the Fitbit and it's benefits, I'll give you a quick run down. This is how Fitbit is described via their website: "When it comes to reaching your fitness goals, steps are just the beginning. Fitbit tracks every part of your day—including activity, exercise, food, weight and sleep—to help you find your fit, stay motivated, and see how small steps make a big impact. Track activity, exercise, food, weight, sleep and more, for real-time information about your day and night. Sync stats wirelessly and automatically from your Fitbit device to your phone or computer" Everything is literally at the touch of your fingers. I can track caloric intake (and it keeps up with how many I'm burning according to my heart rate and steps). I can put in how much water I'm drinking. Oh, and my favorite part is that my Fitbit tells me how well I slept each night. I love that part.

Okay, I realize I'm starting to sound like a commercial and that is clearly NOT why I'm writing this post! I have not been paid a single thing by Fitbit or any affiliates. It's just a product that I have purchased and come to love. I like to share the love. <3

So, today marks a week of my new journey. I have been trying to avoid sugars and carbohydrates. I have averaged 11K steps a day which totals out to 5 miles!!! I am stoked about that. I have been motivated to get up early each day (before sunrise) and get at least half of my 10K goal under my belt. I enjoy the quiet time to listen to music and get my Jesus time in. Since I homeschool my kiddos, time to myself is rare. I do enjoy it. In 7 days, I feel better, I am excited to be moving, and I have shed two pounds. I know that's not much, but if I can do two pounds a week for the next 6 months, I'll be a happy camper.

New Year, New Me!

PhotobucketSo, this is the time when "resolutions" are made...and in a few weeks we'll say this is the time when those "resolutions" are broken.  In my case, of course I want to become a "new me".  I am setting out to lose some weight, get fit, and enjoy life!  I did so well during the summer last year and I have let myself go, so to speak during the last few months.  I've put on 13.5 pounds since my last log on to Weight Watchers!!!  Honestly, that number surprised me, because with the way my clothes are fitting I thought it would be more.  Not only have I put on weight, but I just feel yucky.  I am tired all of the time and have zero motivation!  I am out to change that.  Have you seen Jennifer Hudson lately?!  She was on Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year telling her story and she also sang.  She looks amazing!!!  What an inspiration she is.

I know WW works because I have done it before.  The plan has changed a bit.  They now have "Points Plus" and it looks like fruits and veggies are points free, so that's a great thing.  I am looking for WW recipes and tips for those willing to pass them along.  My e-mail is in the side bar and if you have any resources, I'd be interested.  I have many recipes from when I was doing the plan before.  My husband and I both lost weight and felt much better!  I am out to get fit and healthy!

Last week I bought the New EA Sports Active 2.  I have only done one work out on it and I must say that I love it SO MUCH BETTER than it's predecessor!!!  I have used EA Sports Active Personal Trainer, EA Sports Active More Workouts.  It is a great program and I highly recommend it for those of you who might be like me and cannot find the time to join a gym!  You no longer have to use that corded nunchuck, so there are no restrictions or limitations especially when trying to run or use the resistance band.  Oh, and the leg strap...no worries it is no more.  You do have a strap on the leg, but it fits much better and has it's own built in sensors.  There is also a heart monitor arm strap which I LOVE!  You can see your heart rate on the top of the screen at all times!  What a brilliant idea.  There are lots more resources but I will not go into them here.  Suffice it to say that I am super stoked about the new program and beginning a new work out regimen!

Best of luck to you in whatever endeavors you take on in Twenty - Eleven!  Happy New Year from my home to yours!!!

10 Percent Down!

Fridays are weigh in days for me.  I was surprised today when I was another pound and a half down this morning.  I was hoping to hit my 20 pound goal this week, but sadly enough I have only reached 19.  I have set a 20 pound goal for myself.  When I reach 20 pounds I would like to go get a few tanning visits so that I can be a bit bronzed for the upcoming (I HOPE!!) warmer weather.

Surprisingly enough, however I have reached a milestone in my weight loss.  I have lost 10% of my body weight.  According to Weight Watchers, losing 10% of your body weight can give you the self-confidence and motivation you need to keep going and increases feelings of vigor and vitality. There are also health benefits to losing 10% of your body weight including lowering cholesterol and reducing blood pressure as well as decreasing your risk for Type 2 diabetes! So, not only am I fitting into those "skinny" jeans I couldn't wear for so long, but also I am finding a healthier, more vigorous ME!

It's great to not only see the weight loss myself, but when others notice it's an even greater feeling. Thanks to everyone for your support. Without it, I know that I could not be losing! It's time to kick my KVM switch into high gear! I am hoping that next week I will reach that 20 pound milestone and hit the tanning bed.

Monday Morning Diet Update

This is the beginning of Week 3 on the Weight Watchers program for me! I have been very happy with this diet thus far. I am doing the online version as some of you might remember from a previous post since I cannot attend meetings in my area. It is working out well for me since I have a Blackberry I can look up foods there and use the points calculator when I am shopping to make sure I am buying foods that will fit into my daily points! Since there is only cream for easy stretch mark removal and not for easy fat removal I guess I'll stick it out. I got a three month subscription, so hopefully in this three months time I can get the pounds off and learn a new way of eating.

The great thing about this lifestyle change is that not only am I eating healthier but my family is also. My children are opting for more fruit in place of fruit roll ups or snack cakes! We no longer have a "candy bowl" on the bar with easy access, but it is filled with fruits now including apples, oranges, and bananas! We've changed to low-fat everything and 2% milk. The changes have happened slowly, and we're still adjusting. But, so far it's been easy for everyone! I've gotten some great recipes online and some tried and true recipes from my Facebook friends. If you've got a great WW recipe, please leave it in a comment, or use my e-mail in the sidebar and e-mail it to me! I'd love to try it!

After two full weeks of dieting, and after seeing a small rise in the scale last week, I am happy to report that I am 5 pounds lighter! The EAS Active challenge for the Wii is also going very well. I continue to work out daily. Saturday seems to be my "rest" day for the week. But, every other day I am coming home for lunch and having a healthy lunch which is usually either leftovers or a Weight Watchers, Smart Ones microwave dinner and a salad followed by a great work out!

My Story on Health Care

I know that the debate in the US right now over Health Care Reform is very heated. There are lots of folks, like me and my family who are stuck right in the middle...between a rock and a hard place that is. I have always worked since I was a teenager. When Brien and I were married, I always worked at jobs where I could carry the insurance. Brien is a plumber and worked under some of the best plumbers in town, but unfortunately never had the opportunity to carry health insurance. Now we are small business owners. We have, at any given time at least four men (2 with families to support) on our payroll. Up until last year when I had our third child I worked and carried the health insurance for our family. When Emily was born, we took many things into consideration when making the decision for me to quit my job and go to work with Brien at his business as his office manager. He was paying someone else to do the job at the time. I knew that when Emily was born, I would have to consider child care, transportation back and forth from school and daycare for all three children. When we took all of the factors into consideration, we decided that it was in our best interest for me to quit my job. I had the option of taking the COBRA insurance which would continue my current policy for an additional 18 months at a VERY hefty price. This was our decision. After Emily was born, she went to the office with me and I searched diligently for policies that would fit our family's needs. Unfortunately, with the pre-existing conditions of my husband which include sleep apnea, hypertension, and the fact that he smokes no one is willing to insure him. I have found coverage for the children and I, with exclusions of course. I have a rider for Emily, the youngest member of our family who had a round of RSV last winter. I am paying 175% more for her to be on the policy each month with exclusions! Yes, you read that right. They are charging me 175% more for her to be on the policy but anything that is considered "pre-existing" to them, which I am sure will include any type of ear-infection or anything to do with her lungs such as bronchitis, etc since she had ear infections and RSV in the last 12 months.

As I read over this policy, it just scares me to death. For one, when I sign the dotted line and write that big check to them my coverage will end on my current policy thus terminating coverage for my husband, the bread winner of our family as well as 4 other families! I have a sneaky suspicion that after the first visit or two I will start to get provisions in the policy saying that certain things can no longer be covered. I hate this feeling of insecurity. I hate this feeling of the unknown. It scares me that I will have NO coverage for my husband. He is un-insurable. So, now what? What happens if, God forbid he has to be hospitalized or worse?! These fears will always lurk in the back of my mind.

My opinion is that something needs to be done. I just don't know what. Things have gotten out of hand. Medical costs are sky rocketing, but our pocketbooks aren't rising with them. Our business is the slowest we've ever seen it. Most people can hardly make their house payment, let alone call a plumber for a leaky faucet. It's scary times, folks not just for my family but for yours too in one way or another.

At least the lottery will start next month. Maybe I will put in some lucky numbers and become a millionaire and all of these troubles will just disappear. I'll just hire a personal doctor who can see to it that my children stay healthy.

Happy Thanksgiving

MySpace Graphics
I have so many things in my life that I am thankful for, and as most of you can guess that I am most thankful for my family. I have a happy, healthy family and that in itself is quite an accomplishment. I love my husband with the depths of my soul and I can honestly say he loves me the same in return. We've been friends for so long now that I couldn't imagine my life without him (although these past couple of week's have given me a glimpse with him working out of town and I DON'T like it!!!). My children are healthy and beautiful (okay, maybe I'm a bit partial) and most of the time they are good kids. I have a great job and my husband owns his own business, so the independence with his career is certainly a wonderful thing for all of us. We have a roof over our heads and food on our table. I say that we are a very fortunate family. On this day of thanks I am thankful for all of the blessings that I have mentioned and many more that are too plentiful to list. I am thankful for the opportunity to sit down and type up this post. I am thankful that there are eyes out there that will actually read this post, and many will even leave comments. Thank you all and may you have a blessed and happy Thanksgiving!
