Working For Gravy

PhotobucketYesterday we had lunch at Larry's Pizza in Searcy.  It's a favorite among our family.  They have what they call a "pizza parade" for their buffet. When pizza comes out of the oven, they don't just go sit it under the hot lamp, they bring it around and ask you if you want some!  They have everything from bbq chicken to chicken fajita, cheeseburger (made with mustard instead of pizza sauce) to mac & cheese (YES ON A PIZZA!).  It is delicious.  As we enjoyed our meal yesterday, my daughter noticed a sign on the table. She read it aloud slowly:  Our waitresses work for gr, gra, gravy???  Why do they work for gravy, she asked?!  Well, it's because they like to eat breakfast, I guess, sweetie!  ;)

I did explain to her what gratuity was, Lois and how I tend to tip...by service and not by a standard set by someone else. I explained to her that in a sense we DO all work for "gravy".

Great chance to teach about tipping. My hubby is a great tipper and I've taken up his trend. He always goes above and beyond the standard 18% unless the service is terrible. Makes me smile to see the server clear the table and count their gratuity!

I agree, Lisa. Brien is usually the generous tipper in our family. I will nit-pick them a lot. But, he's a happy man as long as his tea glass doesn't run dry. :)

Fortunately I've never had to work for tips, but I know enough about dealing with the public to know who works hard to earn their money. In fact, at a lot of the local restaurants, we will request our favorites that we know work hard to serve us!
