Time To Care
Have you ever walked from one room to the next to perform an important task and by the time you got to the other room, you've forgotten what you'd gone to do? How would you feel if this happened every time you changed rooms? This memory problem produces stress, anxiety, and distress. This happens to people with Dementia on a daily basis. Dementia is not a disease, it is a general term used to describe brain damage. Many disorders cause dementia including Alzheimer's disease, strokes, Parkinson's disease, aids, & alcohol abuse. Alzheimer's is the most common cause of Dementia. Dementia is caused by the permanent loss or death of brain cells. Once the brain cells are destroyed, they are gone forever. There are no current treatments to reverse the effects of brain damage.
I've been very open about my experiences with Dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Brien's grandmother suffered severely from this horrible illness. I know from personal experience that the disease known as Alzheimer's affects every individual involved. The family who has to watch their loved ones suffer from this disease and care for them in their time of need with this progressive disease. I helped Brien's family care for his grandmother when she required constant care and supervision. Sometimes an individual with Alzheimer's can seem mean or stubborn, these problems are the result of brain damage. They can't control these actions because they have a brain disease, so you should not be discouraged or take it personal. I remember several times when she would get angry with me. This was not in her nature to be mean or stubborn. This was difficult to see such a sweet and wonderful lady to turn into something that she was not.
If you have a loved one suffering from the effects of Dementia or Alzheimer's disease, there is a DVD available to you called "A Time To Care". It is a very informative video presented in a motivational, easy-to-understand style. It is a four part DVD program that addresses the core concept of care for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other types of Dementia.
