Your 19 Month Old - Week Three

Now that your toddler can sit still for longer periods of time (HAH! Are you kidding me!?!?), reading together is more fun than ever. (He did bring me a book for the first time this weekend and laid it down beside me, crawled in my lap and pointed. He began to speak, I assume he demanded asked that I read it to him. He sat there for the first two pages and then he was gone again!) Asking your child to point to objects on a page is a good way to find out how much she understands, even if she can't say the words yet. And she may be able to pick out differences between similar things, like the difference between a red and a yellow fire truck or a black and a brown cow. Don't worry if your child doesn't say many words: A vocabulary of anywhere between ten and 50 words is normal for this stage of development. (My son has a broad vocabulary. I just can't figure out what language he speaks! Heh heh)

it's so funny when they're this age: they definitely think they're telling you something, and you have no idea what it is.
i always talk back as though i know what's going on, like so...
my nephew: blab blab bay talk sounds very cute but makes no sense.
me: why yes, i would like to eat the rest of your animal crackers. thank you for offering.

My parenting group used to call toddler/baby speak Klingon. LOL Everytime Little Princess would look at me and "speak" like she expected me to get it, I would laugh and try to respond. If she was frustrated I didn't understand her, I would jokingly tell her I didn't speak klingon.

I love your comment about your child having a large vocabulary! It must be frustrating for them though. Still it comes soon enough.

They are great at copying what adults say, and how they say it. Maybe too good sometimes!
