Hush!

As I was taking my 5 year old daughter to Kindergarten this morning, I turned on the Ipod and put on one of her favorite songs, Sugarland "All I Wanna Do". This is a fun song to jam out with because of the catchy tune. I was singing along, rather loudly as I usually do when a song is on that I like and know the words to when I was abruptly halted from my musical enjoyment. Shelby was yelling something. I turned down the radio and looked back at her. With much shock and dismay she had her hands over her ears and her eyes were squinted very tightly.

"What, sweetheart?" I asked.

"Mom, would you please quiet down. My ears are already hurting and you are making it much worse with your singing." She replied.

*sigh* ...and to think I was once the female vocalist in a band, but my own daughter doesn't want to listen to me. As soon as she exited the truck at school I began to sing wail again. Thank goodness Emily is too little to shush me! *wink*

OMG I can relate. I am a voice teacher (well, before I had kids!) and my kids will sometimes tell me to stop singing! Right now I'm in the girls' good graces, since I play "princess songs" on the piano for them.

When did we start being not so cool? LOL

Reminds me of a story I saw once in the New York times Metropolitan Diary, the section that publishes people's cute stories about things they've observed in the city. Someone overheard a teenage girl begging her father "When we get there, please don't sing." The father was Billy Joel.

Ohh how I love to sing in the car. The older kids just join in now. My 4 yr old does have sensitive ears too. She regularly tells me the music is too loud. Bless their little hearts! Don't quit singing!
