Conversations with a Four Year Old

My daughter has suddenly taken an infatuation to having her hair braided. Not just a normal braid, but a "French braid". I have never been able to successfully complete this task.
I can braid, but it does not look like a textbook braid (as shown in this photo). Mine sits on top of the head. My sister-in-law told me that I am braiding to the top when I should be braiding to the bottom. So, my dilemma is that I've braided this way all of my life, so how in the heck am I to do it differently now?! I've been trying to do a bit of practicing on her hair, but at four years old patience runs thin very quickly. Her Aunt Lori (the sister-in-law mentioned above) has braided it several times and it always looks so cute when she does. Yesterday morning I decided that since I had some semi-instructions from THE GREAT Aunt Lori I would give it a try. So, I tried...and tried...and tried. After about twenty minutes I give up and the conversation began.
Me: Shelby, I just don't think I can do it as well as Aunt Lori.
Her: Mom, I know. It's okay, you can try again if you want.
Me: Well, I can try all day and I'm not going to be able to do it like her. Maybe I'll just have to watch her braid yours to see what I am doing wrong.
Her: (now very frustrated) Mom, just CALL her!!!
Me: (laughs) now, what good is that going to do?
Her: She can TELL you how to do it RIGHT!

She always has a logical answer for everything! Wanna read more?

LOL!
I love conversations with kids!!
And I can NOT do a french braid. I have tried to learn and can never figure it out! So if my girls want theirs french braided, they have to find someone else to do it!

I hesitate to make this comment....

I use to braid the girls hair...but for the life of me can't make a decent braid on my own head.

Twice this week....I have had my 19 year old french braid my hair...it takes her about 45 seconds....sigh...I'm glad she's back from college....

I'm the opposite of katherine, I can braid my own hair, but can't do the girls'.

Don't you love when your kids are smarter than you give them credit for.

I've been totally thinking about this one myself, I even tried to find instructions online which are more technical and complex than assembly instructions for toys! It was insane, I'll have to have my 15 year old stepsister show me how since she knows how to do it! :) Good luck, keep practicing!

I would have loved to see a picture of what it looked like after you braided it!! I bet it looked really good. I have three daughters so I better learn this quickly!!

Sounds right to me.

By the way, I love the new look. Very nice.

The only thing I could ever braid properly was the tail on a "My Pretty Pony" toy or a Barbie doll. When it comes to real-life human hair I am horrible!

Some things in life we can just never do it seems!

I can't figure out how in the world you are braiding up. I might have to see you do this. :)

Geez - there's no arguing with that logic is there?

What a sweetie she is! I'm with ya though - I'm all thumbs when it comes to braids. Luckily my SIL is a hairdresser and can do all kinds of fancy ones :-)

I enjoyed reading this conversation. It brought back fond memories. When I was a young girl, I had long hair and I love having my hair braided. I also enjoyed removing it at the end of the day because of the instant curls.

I can not french braid hair at all.

My daughter, before we cut ten inches off for Locks of Love, would have me braid her hair every day. I could never get the French Braid thing. My sister on the other hand, would whip one into my daughter's hair in a matter of seconds. This is not a talent that I have.
