Southerners Tagged!!

I was tagged, well sort of, by Cherl. She posted about being from the south. There are lots of things that make us unique. One of the key things she posted about was tea. Yup, we like our tea sweet and cold. It's that easy.

Being from the south, I must say that I like lots of foods fried, we deep fry lots of veggies, even some fruits. I LOVE fried squash, okra, potatoes & pickles. I also love to eat fried green tomatoes. I love a good ole pot of brown beans. But, they've got to have a big ham bone in them to give them some good flavor. They've got to be served with a side of fried potatoes and some yummy cornbread. Some strawberry shortcake is a great summertime treat.

As a general rule in the south, we call all soft drinks a "coke". We'll ask what kind of coke do you want, meaning do you want a Dr Pepper, Pepsi, or Coke?

In the south we are very proud of our high school football teams! We'll sit in rain, sleet, or snow singing the fight song the whole time to see our team make it to the play offs!

As a southerner, I love nature. I love the smell of freshly cut grass. I love the smell of honeysuckles, rose bushes, and a freshly fallen rain. I love to walk out at night and just stare at the stars and think to myself that I am such a small creature in this great big ole universe!

It's true, most everyone knows someone that is named or called Bubba, Earl, or a female with two first names Ruth Ann or Mary Lou.

We love to use the words ya'll, 'ole, buttload, yonder, fixin' (fixin' to do something).

Any song can be considered country if it has a fiddle or steel guitar.

What about you? What do you know about your part of the country that makes ya'll different?

I am 100% with you on being a Southerner! Isn't it great?!?

I have called my brother "Bubba" all his life. Now my kids call him that, too.

On one of my first visits to get to know my new eventual in-laws, she was making greens. What kind, I do not know, but she asked if we ate those.

Completely honestly, I replied "no, that's the part we throw away".

And it's true - I realized later how snotty it probably sounded to the lifelong tennessean, but it's TRUE. We don't eat that part. Ick. It's nasty. LOL

I think it's funny when we come back from visiting down south, we pick up their sayings like "I'm fixin to make dinner". It takes a while to get back to normal LOL

Oh, and I find it really funny that yall call soda POP alot too.

You'll be horrified to learn that the all-yankee Bravo Network recently had a "Barbeque" contest on their show TOP-CHEF.

Read about this event at my blog.

And check out this funny cracker Woman, while you're at it.

I'm one of those half-breeds.
You know, I lived in the south long enough to still say "y'all" and "fixin'" like yesterday it was fixin' to rain... but I've been in the north long enough to say "pop" instead of "coke" for a generic soft drink.

I say soda, which apparently is a Wisconsin thing. In WI we also emphasize our A's long and short. And we say melk. I love chocolate melk.
