Braxton Hicks

David, this post is for you.
He had a question about what Braxton Hicks contractions were. So, I did a bit of research for you and here's the best definition that I could find online.

These "practice" contractions occur at various times during pregnancy, but can increase in intensity during your last month. They happen at random and are typically not painful - some women do not even notice them. They do not dilate the cervix as "real" contractions, do.
contraction--The regular tightening of the uterus, working to dilate and efface (widen and thin) the cervix and to push the baby down the birth canal. Whether or not a contraction is painful should not be used as a measure of its effect on dilation.
